Post #35 The CCC are fucking shit

So today I went into the city mall, the high street part. This is the first time I have been there without headphones on since the speakers playing "classical music" have been installed.

I write "classical music" like this because it really isn't true, most of the music they play isn't truly classical but instrumental versions of adult contemporary songs (my heart will go on ect). The quality of the speakers is also terrible. if they are going to pump music into the Christchurch streets they could at least put up good quality speakers.

They obviously installed them it was to try and deter teenagers from spending any time in that area.

It makes me sick to think that those in power in this city are willing to do something so shit. To treat a sector of the community like they're not wanted and they don't belong. We would never do this to any other minority in Christchurch but it seems ok to do this to young people.

Teenagers have very few places where they are actually welcome. They don't have huge amounts of disposable cash to spend at cafes ect, they don't have free access to houses and homes where they can feel welcome to spend large amounts of times in big groups, they are not wanted in parks and malls and they can't get into bars and clubs. The City centre is one of the only places welcome for teenagers to socialise and our representatives are trying to scare them away.

The message I get from acts like this, is they want to tell the teenagers that there is no place in New Zealand society for people like them. When you grow up and get a job and can inject money into our local economy you can come back into to town. But until then you are not welcome, stay in your homes, don't socialise. But it's completely ok because the council funds a couple of youth focussed events a year and you can go to zebedees at night sometimes as long as you dont cause too much trouble.

These people are members of the community, they need to be treated with at least a bit of respect. Why should the whole of society be designed for adults.

So anyway my new goal for this year is to get the music in this sector of the city mall turned off and get an official apology from the city council to the youth of Christchurch for treating them so badly. Is anyone keen to help?

  2. It's probably not what you think it is, Eamonn.
Some people like shitty pan-flute midi tracks of my heart will go on, and other fucking gems along that line, and they don't know nearly enough about appropriate speakers, insisting that Homebrand is the way to go. But they're not necissarily excluding teenagers and teenagers-at-heart from using the public area, they're just trying to create some kind of retarded ambience for their target markets. Kids can hang out any fuckin place they want, and they do! What's wrong with the Botanic Gardens, Hagley Park, the Port Hills, around by the river having sessions all the while? Covert sessions though. haaaaaa
